Joint statement by United National Antiwar Coalition (US) and Stop the War Coalition (UK)
‘The protesters remind us that the US government is not representative of the US people. It’s encouraging to see so many willing to stand up against this unjust, disastrous war in Afghanistan.’
One thing crystal clear in secretive US-Afghan ‘strategic partnership agreement’: the occupation is not even close to ending
The murderous rampage by a US army sergeant in Afghanistan on March 11, killing 16 civilians (mainly women and children) signifies the death throes of the US occupation. Getting the troops out of Afghanistan will allow democratic Afghans – such as Malalai Joya – to play a role in working out the political solution. She remains adamant that all foreign troops should leave Afghanistan.
Call it the Friends of Libya war; the R2P war (as in “responsibility to protect” Western plunder); the Air France war; the Total war; anyway, the “friends” had a blast spinning their win in Libya, which magically is not in Africa anymore. It has been relocated (upgraded?) to Arabia.
This opinion piece by Malalai Joya appeared in the August 30 Age. A longer version appears in the spring issue of Overland magazine.
Malalai Joya, a former MP and outspoken anti-war activist, is visiting Australia for a third time on the eve of the 10-year anniversary of the invasion of Afghanistan. She is being hosted by Sydney Stop the War Coalition, the Melbourne Writers Festival, courtesty of Overland Magazine and SAWA.

KABUL, Afghanistan — More than 1,000 protesters poured into a northern Afghan city Wednesday, shouting “Death to America!” and calling for justice as they clashed with security forces following an overnight NATO raid they claim killed four civilians.
At least six people were killed as the protesters fought with police and tried to assault a NATO outpost. The protest took place in the city of Taloqan, the capital of Takhar province.
The NATO raid they were protesting took place hours before in the outskirts of the city…
(Reuters) – Despite battlefield gains against insurgents in southern Afghanistan, the United States is failing to win over Afghans in the heartland of the Taliban, a new study shows.
Almost 90 percent of men polled in contested districts in southern Afghanistan believe foreign military operations are bad for them, according to research by the International Council on Security and Development, or ICOS.
Given the haste with which the no-fly resolution was passed at the UN Security Council, one may ask: How much evidence, aside from Gaddafi’s blood-curdling hyper-rhetoric, was there of an unfolding genocide or a ‘crime against humanity’ in Libya?
