MEDIA RELEASE
February 22, 2011
Sydney Stop the War Coalition welcomes the pro-democracy movement sweeping the Middle-East and North Africa. We salute the many thousands of protesters who have inspired millions across the world with their courage and solidarity.
This wave of struggle reveals how false is the idea peddled by Western leaders - including the Gillard government - that the way to bring democracy and liberation is invasion and occupation, as they justified the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
In country after country across the Middle-East and North Africa men and women from all walks of life are showing that the US and its allies are the main obstacle to democracy.
Far from relying on Western intervention to overthrow tyrants and democratize their societies, it is the brutal violence of Western-backed dictators that they need to overcome in order to realise their democratic aspirations.
In Gaddafi’s Libya, which was transformed from pariah to ally in 2003 when the regime offered to join the so-called “war on terror,” more than 300 protesters have been killed in the past few days.
In Bahrain, another strategic ally of the US (it hosts the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet), at least 7 people have been killed and hundreds injured in recent protests for democratic reforms.
Sydney Stop the War Coalition calls on the Gillard government to make an unequivocal statement supporting the movement for democracy across the region, and condemning the murderous brutality dealt out to peaceful protesters by autocratic regimes.
We call on anyone who wishes to express solidarity with the movements for democracy in the Middle-East and North Africa to join the demonstrations today and Saturday.
