We are calling for your support to protest in Canberra when the US President Barrack Obama’s addresses Parliament on November 17.
Obama and PM Julia Gillard will be talking up the Australia-US Alliance. This is a good opportunity to protest details of the ANZUS alliance including the proposed joint operation of military bases in Australia, and the bipartisan government support of US policy in Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine.
This is also an opportunity to renew protest Australian and US government attacks on WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, and the US government’s persecution and torture of accused WikiLeaks whistleblower, Bradley Manning.
We also want to show our support for the Occupy movement in the US, and Australia, which has taken its inspiration from the Arab Spring and revolts sweeping across Europe and South Asia protesting against austerity measures.
We invite groups and individuals to join us to demonstrate that the trillions of dollars being spent on war and militarism have a direct impact on essential services for ordinary people.
The US president’s visit provides us with an opportunity to make our voices heard, and to join with the movement of the 99% opposing wars for the 1%.
We will join Christine Assange, StandFast (Vets Against the Iraq and Afghanistan War), Stop the War Coalition, Peacebus.com, UnionsACT, Medical Association for the Prevention of War, Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, Jews against the Occupation and Palestinian activists in a protest on Parliament House lawns against the continuing irrational and cowardly wars being fought in our name.
We have hired a bus that will leave Sydney at 7am (check in time is 6.30am) to arrive in Canberra at 10am and return in the evening of the same day. The return trip will cost between $30-40.
Check in time is 6.30am at corner of Jones Street and Broadway, next to the Tower Building of UTS.
In solidarity,
Jann Dark (jann.dark@optusnet.com.au) or Christine Keavney (christine.keavney@yahoo.com)
